About Neuron Gear
We're a team of literary professionals dedicated to helping people discover books that truly matter. Our work combines deep knowledge of literature with a genuine commitment to personalised service.
Our Story
Neuron Gear began in 2011 when our founder, Dr. Helena Ashworth, recognised a growing problem among readers. Despite unprecedented access to books, people felt overwhelmed by choice and uncertain about where to invest their reading time.
Helena had spent fifteen years as a university lecturer in comparative literature, helping students navigate complex texts and discover connections across literary traditions. She noticed that many of her friends and colleagues outside academia faced similar challenges: they wanted to read more thoughtfully but lacked the guidance to choose books aligned with their interests and goals.
What started as informal recommendations for friends evolved into a structured service. Helena developed a systematic approach to understanding readers' profiles and matching them with appropriate books. As word spread, demand grew beyond what she could handle alone.
Today, Neuron Gear is a team of eight literary specialists, each bringing expertise in different genres, periods, and traditions. We've helped over eight hundred clients develop richer reading lives, working with everyone from busy professionals to dedicated scholars.
Our Mission
We exist to make reading more rewarding. In a world drowning in content, we help people find books that genuinely enhance their thinking, broaden their perspectives, and deepen their understanding.
We believe that reading should be challenging without being frustrating, accessible without being simplistic, and relevant without being narrow. Our role is to bridge the gap between readers and the vast world of literature, making discovery easier and more enjoyable.
What We Stand For
Intellectual Integrity
We recommend books based on quality and relevance, never commercial considerations. Our independence ensures honest, unbiased guidance that serves your interests above all else.
Respect for Readers
We trust you to make your own judgements. Our role is to inform and suggest, not to prescribe or dictate. You know yourself best; we provide the knowledge and context to support your choices.
Continuous Learning
The literary world never stops evolving, and neither do we. Our team reads constantly, staying current with new publications while continuously revisiting classic works with fresh perspectives.
Personalised Service
Every reader is unique. We reject one-size-fits-all approaches in favour of individualised attention that recognises your specific background, interests, and aspirations.
Long-Term Thinking
We're not interested in quick fixes or trending titles. We focus on building sustainable reading habits and helping you develop a lasting relationship with books.
Intellectual Curiosity
We encourage exploration beyond comfort zones. Some of the most rewarding reading experiences come from venturing into unfamiliar genres, periods, or perspectives.

How We Work
We Read Extensively
Our team collectively reads hundreds of books annually across all genres and periods. This breadth of engagement allows us to make informed comparisons and spot connections that casual readers might miss.
We Listen Carefully
Understanding you is the foundation of effective curation. We ask questions, pay attention to nuance, and adapt our recommendations based on your feedback and changing interests.
We Think Strategically
Each recommendation fits into a broader picture. We consider how books connect, where they might lead, and how they support your overall learning goals.
We Remain Independent
We accept no compensation from publishers, authors, or booksellers. Our only obligation is to our clients, ensuring recommendations are always made in your best interest.

Our Reading Philosophy
We believe reading is fundamentally about curiosity and growth. The best books don't just entertain or inform; they change how you think about the world and yourself.
This perspective shapes everything we do. We're not interested in helping you check boxes or accumulate titles for social credentials. We care about finding books that genuinely expand your thinking and enrich your inner life.
Reading should challenge you appropriately—neither so simple that it bores you nor so difficult that it frustrates you. The ideal book meets you at your current level while stretching you toward new understanding. Finding that balance requires knowing both the literature and the reader.
We also believe in breadth. While specialisation has its place, reading across disciplines creates unexpected insights. A novel can illuminate philosophy; history can deepen your appreciation of poetry; science writing can change how you read fiction. We encourage clients to trust these cross-pollinations rather than staying strictly within established interests.
Finally, we recognise that reading is personal. What moves one person leaves another cold. There's no shame in abandoning a book that isn't working, and there's no virtue in finishing everything you start. We help you develop confidence in your own judgements while exposing you to perspectives that might not naturally occur to you.
